A Host's Guide To Airbnb's Enhanced Cleaning

Do you follow Airbnb's Enhanced Cleaning Protocol? Learn how to clean your Airbnb up to the new enhanced cleaning standards & welcome guests to a safely.

During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Airbnb has committed to offering guests and hosts a safe working and living environment. In May 2020, Airbnb launched a new Cleaning Protocol with enhanced procedures and guidance on how to clean every room in your Airbnb. Below, we outline these steps to help you create safe accommodation for your guests.

What is Airbnb Enhanced Cleaning Protocol?

The Airbnb Enhanced Cleaning Protocol is a 5-step cleaning process with strict cleaning practices. These steps must be followed by the Host or cleaning services in addition to following their local guidelines and laws. If a Host cannot commit to the new Cleaning Protocol, they can opt-in for a booking buffer on the Airbnb platform. This buffer automatically creates a vacancy period between stays for 72 hours before the property is bookable again.

The 5 Step Enhanced Cleaning Process

All Airbnb Hosts who have opted for the Enhanced Cleaning Protocol will have to follow the below steps after every check-out. This ensures the next check-in feels safe and right at home when travelling during the pandemic.

Step 1: Prepare

To ensure Hosts and the cleaning team cleans efficiently and safely it's necessary to prepare well. If possible, open all windows and doors to ventilate the space before and during cleaning. Use disinfectants approved by your local authorities to ensure proper disinfection. Remember to wash and disinfect your gloves as you move from surface to surface.

Step 2: Clean

The second step entails removing dirt and dust from surfaces like floors, countertops, stands and shelves. Sweep, vacuum, dust and mop areas before sanitising. When washing dishes, linen and laundry, do so at the highest temperature possible. Clean any hard surfaces with soap and water.

Step 3: Sanitise

When sanitising surfaces, use chemicals to reduce bacteria on high-touch surfaces such as TV remotes, light switches, doorknobs, refrigerators, microwaves, kettles, etc. When using alcohol allow the surfaces to air dry.

Step 4: Check

Airbnb has shared a custom cleaning checklist that is targeted for each room in your short-term rental property. Be sure to share these tips and checklists with your team and cleaning service providers, too.

Step 5: Reset

Prevent cross-contamination by cleaning and sanitising one room at a time. Wash and sanitise your hands before replacing guest supplies like shower amenities, towels, linen and cleaning kits. Don't re-enter a room once it's been cleaned and disinfect cleaning equipment between turnovers.
